Never Drink An Espresso Martini Again: Carajillo Recipe
I get it. Espresso martinis are trendy—but you’re a trendsetter, baby. It’s time to go against the grain and try something a little off the so-called beaten path, like a classic carajillo.
The original carajillo hails from Spain where it’s an early-morning fixture in working-class neighborhood bars: a shot of espresso served alongside brandy, anise, rum, or aguardiente. Fast forward to today, and you’ve got a simple cocktail that hits your caffeine craving every time.
INGREDIENTS:
MAKES ONE DRINK
2 ounces espresso coffee (cold brew will do in a pinch!)
2 ounces Licor 43 (or coffee liqueur of choice)
4-6 ice cubes
Orange rind for garnish
DIRECTIONS:
1. Chill your glass. Set a glass in the freezer for 15 minutes before preparing.
2. Make your espresso. While your glass is chilling, prepare your espresso and let cool for a few minutes.
3. Pour. Place about 4 ice cubes in your glass, then add the Licor 43, then slowly pour the coffee over the ice. Pour the coffee very slowly and it will float on top of the liqueur which makes the drink look really sharp.
4. Serve immediately. Twist an orange rind over top for garnish and added aromatics.
