Never Drink An Espresso Martini Again: Carajillo Recipe

I get it. Espresso martinis are trendy—but you’re a trendsetter, baby. It’s time to go against the grain and try something a little off the so-called beaten path, like a classic carajillo.

The original carajillo hails from Spain where it’s an early-morning fixture in working-class neighborhood bars: a shot of espresso served alongside brandy, anise, rum, or aguardiente. Fast forward to today, and you’ve got a simple cocktail that hits your caffeine craving every time.

INGREDIENTS:

MAKES ONE DRINK

  • 2 ounces espresso coffee (cold brew will do in a pinch!)

  • 2 ounces Licor 43 (or coffee liqueur of choice)

  • 4-6 ice cubes

  • Orange rind for garnish

DIRECTIONS:

1. Chill your glass. Set a glass in the freezer for 15 minutes before preparing.

2. Make your espresso. While your glass is chilling, prepare your espresso and let cool for a few minutes.

3. Shake. Pour the espresso or cold brew coffee and Licor 43 into a cocktail shaker*. Fill the shaker halfway with ice, seal, and shake until the outside of the shaker is very frosty, about 20 seconds.

4. Serve immediately. Pour into chilled glass with ice. Twist an orange rind over the top for garnish and added aromatics.

*Note: Don’t have a cocktail shaker? No problem! Use a sealed mason jar or to-go coffee mug instead.
